Why did IFCstat introduce the Match Equalizer?
On 1 August 2013, IFStat introduced the Match Equalizer, now calculating World Ranking points on the basis of an equal number of matches per domestic competition. Previously, differences in the World Ranking points could have been related to differences in the number of matches played. These vary considerably per domestic competition.
For example in England, the number of matches per club in the Premier League is 38, while in Uruguay it is only 30. Previously, the calculation of ranking points did not correct for these differences, leading clubs acting in smaller competitions to have a comparative disadvantage.
As of August 1 2013, all domestic competitions will be synchronized on 38 matches per season. The Match Equalizer is expressed in a multiplier, which is yearly set for each competition, based on the number of matches of the regular competition and the play-offs.
Important notice All rankings from the start of The Football Club Ranking on 5 December, 2011 have been recalculated with the new Match Equalizer multiplier retroactively, in order to guarantee historical consistency.
